PeerTube

PeerTube is kind of like YouTube, but decentralised. That means you download some software and then run it on your server and you have your own mini-YouTube. And then connects to other mini-YouTubes on the Internet to make one big giant YouTube. Except it’s called PeerTube.

Generally, versions of PeerTube have no adverts. And therefore offers publishers very little in the way of making money. It also uses torrent technology, so that if many people are watching one video at the same time, it downloads it from each other, rather than one central server. This is a very cost-efficient way of streaming video.

The website also uses a technology called ActivityPub. This means if you have an account on a website which uses the same technology, such as Mastodon, you can follow any PeerTube account without having to set up an account on PeerTube.
